I travelled around Italy for a month at the end of 1990 and kept a sketchbook. This painting was based on the sketch of a painting I saw in Bergamo which attracted my attention amid the thousands of religious paintings. I think it was the shadow cast across the face by the headscarf that caught my eye - at least I didn't get much beyond that in this painting…
