1991oil on canvas, 81 x 110 cm

One of my first paintings that included an element from my photographic experiments. The photo was taken through the lens of a pair of binoculars of a window of Holy Trinity Church, Lyne. The under-painting was based on a little drawing I'd made of a figure standing beneath feet nailed to a post and calling up to the figure: "don't go! I don't know how to get there…" but I didn't like how it turned out in paint so I painted over it with this mixture of abstraction and photo-realism, although the photo being on it's side it becomes another formal element. I left it with the left side in this half-worked state, a splash of colours scraped away. I guess I was not looking to explain things but rather put forward my own questions.
