In 2001 I spent 3 months living with my elderly grandfather and painting for an exhibition in Wellington. Most of my work was abstract but I wanted to paint my grandfather's portrait. The large scale of the portrait belies his fragility. His only comment on seeing the completed portrait was "I don't like the moustache."
