Painted over a previous painting of two stylised faces which are just visible in the textures of the painting, I was finding my own abstract language and painting techniques. Working in layers, combining washes of paint with thickly painted areas and simple lines that direct the eye over the space. Possible the earthy colours come from my interest in Velázquez. I would spend a lot time with his paintings in the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square.
